Ngongotaha AFC and Papakura City went into their game on Saturday with identical records and after 90 minutes nothing had changed.
After trailing 3-1 at one point during the game played in Ngongotaha, Papakura scored twice in the last five minutes to draw 3-all.
Ngongotaha took the lead in the sixth minute through a George Watson header and held the 1-0 lead at halftime.
Papakura squared things up through Peter Wild but minutes later Scott McKnight scored from a cross to reclaim the lead for Ngongotaha.
Mitch Miller added a third - a blasted shot from outside the box into the top corner of the goal - and Ngongotaha led 3-1 with eight minutes to play.
Papakura fought back and Charlie Heather scored in the 85th minute before Wild scored his second to tie the game.
Ngongotaha coach Shane Davis was disappointed about the way his side threw away the lead, but said the result was probably a fair reflection of the game.
"I thought we had it in the bag, but it wasn't to be. A couple of errors cost us and resulted in a draw.
"We played really well to go up 3-1 and scored some quality goals, we just didn't shut up shop," Davis said.
The man of the match for Ngongotaha was goalkeeper James Towers who saved a penalty.
The result sees Ngongotaha hold onto sixth place and they still have a game in hand over most teams above them.
"We've got four games left and we just need to keep picking up points and try and finish in the top four," he said.
