Rotorua's dining precinct Eat Streat is almost complete with the installation of retractable awnings earlier this week.
It's the final stage of the project, which has taken almost six years since the street was closed to traffic in December 2008.
Rotorua District Council's acting chief operations officer, Henry Weston, said subject to weather or unforeseen circumstances, the work should be complete in two weeks.
"Eleven of Eat Streat's 12 dining establishments opted to purchase retractable roofs. The new roof structures will help protect restaurants' outside dining areas from weather," Mr Weston said.
Ambrosia Restaurant and Bar owner Kris Beehre said the new electrically operated awnings looked great.
"They don't make you feel closed in and do let in some light as well ... It's going to be brilliant when it's all done," Mr Beehre said.
Brew Craft Beer Pub co-owner Paul Croucher said he was excited to see the project finally come to fruition.
"It's actually quite good timing because we've been a bit quiet recently and really want to see these up and ready for summer."
