One of New Zealand's most celebrated magicians has wowed Rotorua pupils, using his unique blend of magic and humour to serve up invaluable social messages.
And he had Zazu, Ecce and Ruby - exotic, talking parrots - along for the ride.
Kawaha Point Primary School pupils were yesterday treated to Elgregoe's show 'You've Got the Power', a show specifically designed to support the primary and intermediate school curriculums.
Through the charisma of magic, Elgregoe, also known as Greg Britt, delivers shows focused on anti-bullying education.
He uses tricks, puppets, ventriloquism, music and props to enliven his anti-bullying messages.
The show draws attention to what bullying can look like, and teaches kids about how to treat others.
Teacher Terrence O'Brien said the show was effective because it conveyed the anti-bullying message in a context pupils understood.
"It's the same message pupils are taught year after year by their teachers but the show is so popular with children because it captures and engages them.
"Shows like this one are so important because they reinforce what all teachers are trying to do and allow kids to learn without realising that's what they're doing." Mr Britt said the 2015 'You've Got The Power' show, supported by Trustpower, looked at how we could all be part of a solution to bullying.
"Throughout the show I try to reinforce key values such as respect, resilience, caring, honesty and the importance of contributing." He said he wanted to see students having fun while they looked at the serious issues around bullying.
"I am one lucky guy. I love performing my tricks, doing ventriloquism, working with live parrots and travelling, and I get to do all this for a job while also delivering a valuable message for all children."
