Armed police in Hawke's Bay set up a cordon near the intersection of Omahu Rd and State Highway 50 near Fernhill on Friday morning.

A police spokesman said they responded to the incident at about 5.30am.

The entrance to Omahu Rd was blocked for about two-and-a-half hours.

Police at the scene would not say what the cordon was for. However, the spokesman said it was in place as a "precaution".

No arrests were made.
