A man has been arrested after a suspected shooting incident in Otane yesterday.

Late afternoon yesterday a man presented to Hawke's Bay Hospital with critical injuries following the altercation in the Central Hawke's Bay settlement.

Inquiries are continuing but police said following the arrest of the 40-year-old man they were confident there is no ongoing risk to public safety.

The man is in custody and is due to appear in the Hastings District Court on Monday, on a wounding charge.

The victim, a 47-year-old male, remains in a critical condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

The Armed Offenders Squad was deployed to the address yesterday afternoon.

Senior Sergeant Mike Stevenson said police were alerted that a man in his 40s had arrived at hospital at approximately 1.50pm. They were making inquiries to establish how the man received those injuries.

Police were also called to the corner of Lowe St and Orchard Rd and a vehicle was towed from the scene at about 2.20pm, a police spokesperson said.
