Pedestrian dies after being hit by car in Napier

The Queen's Birthday weekend road toll sits at one after a 22-year-old pedestrian was hit by a car in Napier.

The young man, Jonathan Knuiman, was a local, police say. He died at the scene.

Police are investigating the incident which occurred on State Highway 2, just north of Hawke's Bay Airport in Napier, about 11pm last night.

The driver of the vehicle was speaking with police and the Serious Crash Unit will be investigating.

SH2 was closed between the airport and Bay View. Diversions were in place.

Last Queen's Birthday weekend 11 people lost their lives on roads around New Zealand. It was the highest toll for a Queen's Birthday weekend in 27 years.
