A human skull washed up near Te Awanga beach this afternoon.

A police spokesman said police were called to a beach near Te Awanga at 4PM where a member of the public located what appeared to be a human skull which had washed up on the high tide mark.

Eastern Command Centre Senior Sergeant Dan Foley said not much was known at this stage, but police had taken posession of the skull.

The skull will now be sent for forensic testing to ascertain whether its age and identity can be established.
