Staci Walkley, 11, died in August in the two-vehicle crash in Kaikohe.

Staci Walkley, 11, died in August in the two-vehicle crash in Kaikohe.

The mother of Kaikohe 11-year-old Staci Walkley, who died in a car crash in August, is pleased someone is being held to account.

The two-vehicle crash occurred in the Far North town of Kaikohe on August 6.

Staci Waireia Walkley died at the scene and five other people were injured.

Police confirmed that last week an 18-year-old male was summonsed to the Kaikohe Youth Court and faces charges including dangerous driving causing death, five charges of dangerous driving causing injury, and failing to stop to ascertain injury.

This results from an ongoing investigation into a fatal crash on Hillcrest Rd in August, police said in a statement.

“Serious Crash investigations can be complex and ultimately take time to be carried out. It’s important for the victims and families that this takes place,” police said.

“Police have maintained contact with whānau through the investigation process.”

Staci’s mother Candice Walkley said it was a relief the next step has started.

“It’s a relief that we’re finally on the move; it’s bringing a lot of peace for the family.”

Walkley described Staci as a happy-go-lucky girl who touched a lot of hearts.

“Her heart was so big for everyone. No matter what, she always had a smile on her face.”
