Northland's No.1 amateur golfer Alex Tait is preparing for a crack at a professional career on the fairways of Europe.
"I want to go to England in early March and have a go at qualifying for the EuroPro Tour," he said.
The EuroPro is the third-tier professional circuit in Europe.
"If my golf's
good enough and I can get the finances, I will be there."
But first the 32-year-old will lead Northland into battle in 16 days time in the Interprovincial Tournament in Napier in what could possibly be his last major teams event in amateur golf.
A former New Zealand cricket player and Northland representative in cricket, squash and golf, Tait says his latest goal was by far the scariest.
He estimates between $40-50,000 will be needed to give professionalism a good shot.
"I look back at my cricket career and I was never too fazed about anyone I bowled to - I enjoyed the challenge but this is actually quite frightening.
"If I don't get past the qualifying school, it means I have lost a hell of a lot of money and will have to start from scratch.
"It's a huge jump in my career and it's a bit frightening."
But the prospect of succeeding in qualifying school and playing professional golf was a mouth-watering one.
"There's a chance to make a bit of money out of a sport I enjoy," he said.
"I am finding it hard to get fired up about playing amateur golf at the moment, it can cost about $300 to travel down the line for a tournament and, if you play well, you come home with a $100 voucher.
"Unless you are financially well off, it's a costly sport."
Tait is currently coaching squash in the evenings so has plenty of time during the day to practise on the Pines course at Parua Bay.
He has been seeking advice from good friend Jack Broome as decision day looms.
"I am under no illusions about how tough it will be to play pro golf. I need to do a lot of work on my technique and fitness to strengthen certain parts of my body.
"In two months time I might decide it's not viable to do it. A lot depends on finance," he said.
If he does give it a nudge, Tait will contest a pre-qualifying tournament in England in March with the top place-getters gaining entry to the final qualifying tournaments.
"I have been practising a hell of a hard over the last six months because this is something I want to have a crack at."
Tait has been playing for the Northland men's team since he retired from cricket in 2000.
"I played golf before I even took up a squash racquet or cricket bat. I have come back to my first sport.
"It's one of the few sports where you can never be completely satisfied with what you have achieved, it's quite addictive," he said.
