Sports editor a finalist

Northern Advocate sports editor Cameron Leslie is a finalist in the TP McLean Sports Journalism Awards.

The National Sports Journalism Awards, which honour legendary sports journalist Sir Terry McLean, are a collaboration between Sport New Zealand and the New Zealand Sports Journalists Association Inc. (NZSJA).

More than 115 entries were received this year across 10 categories.

Leslie is a finalist in the New Zealand Herald DJ Cameron Young Writer Award category, along with Auckland sports journalists Daniel Silverton (Times Newspaper) and Matiu Workman (Perform Media).

"It's a bit of a surprise to make it as a finalist.

"I never got into journalism to win awards or anything like that so it's pretty cool to be up for an award like this," Leslie said.

The winners will be announced at the TP McLean Awards Dinner at the Novotel Ellerslie Hotel in Auckland on November 28.

Leslie has also been nominated for the 2013 Attitude People's Choice Award and is a finalist in the Sport Performer of the Year category for his achievements in swimming and wheelchair rugby.
