The Northland men's squash team has slightly surpassed their seeding, while the women's team matched theirs at the Senior National Championships.

The event, which took place at the Remuera Rackets Club, showcased some of the best squash talent in the country, and Northland held their own.

Luke Jones, Brent Lewis, Finn Trimble, Neil Rossin and Ryan Chestnut won two of their three matches, losing only eventual champions Canterbury.

They beat both Wellington and Central by a margin of 3-1, the same scoreline as their loss, and finished third after starting the tournament seeded fourth.

Meanwhile, the women's team had a slightly tougher time of it, yet still finished fourth to match their seeding.

After being swept 4-0 by Bay of Plenty, they hit back with a 3-1 win over Wellington and finished with a tough 3-1 loss to Auckland.

The team consisted of Shelley Kitchen, Sacha Pou-Tito, Trina Moore, Zoe Dykzeul, MacKenzie Johnson and Sian Duggan.

Trimble, of the men's team, also had success at the recently completed World Junior Championships.

Along with former Northlander Sam Sayes, Trimble was part of the national junior men's team which finished eighth, after starting the tournament seeded eighth.

In the team competition, NZ opened with 3-0 wins over Poland and Argentina. They suffered a setback when they went down to the fourth-seeded India 2-1, but recovered to beat Canada 2-1.

Despite losing to top-seed Egypt 3-0, they made the cut for the quarterfinals.

Unfortunately, that was as good as it got as they lost to India 2-0 and lost their playoff for seventh to Australia 2-1, finishing eighth.

Individually, Trimble and Sayes had solid tournaments.

Both went two for two; Sayes was pipped in his opening match which put him into the plate competition, while Trimble had two good wins but lost to eventual champion Eain Yow Ng of Malaysia.

Trimbleis young enough to be eligible to compete in the individual competition in Tauranga.
