Northlanders must be continuing to get stronger if results from the Northland Powerlifting Championships are anything to go by - with 48 Northland records being set or broken.

With only 18 lifters taking up the challenge, to have 48 records be swept aside at Community Fitness in Kerikeri is astonishing.

Northland Powerlifting Association secretary Brian Froggatt said a highlight for him was seeing Joseph Whittaker produce three Northland records last Saturday in the open men's 120kg class with his 255kg squat, 155 bench press and 280kg deadlift.

"Joseph Whittaker's huge squat and dead lift were outstanding," Froggatt said. "They would have been pretty close to national records.

"Everyone did personal bests and there were only three lifters who didn't get records."

Froggatt was part of a family trio, along with his wife Karen Thomson and son Hugh Thomson, who all set Northland records.

In another winning combination, Bryan Barrett and daughter Katrina Barrett won their respective divisions, with Katrina setting four Northland records.

The Northland team showed they are in great shape for the North Island Champs on June 21 and 22 in Tauranga.
