Tauranga right-arm off-spinner Jono Boult is the only major addition to the successful Northern Districts cricket squad that picked up two of the three major titles in the 2009-10 season.
Boult, older brother of pace bowler Trent, who also received a contract in the 11-strong team announced last week, replaces former Kerikeri spin bowler Bruce Martin in the team.
Boult has impressed when given an opportunity over the past two seasons and Whangarei all-rounder Joey Yovich said he deserved to be offered a contract this year.
"I think he thoroughly deserves his contract, obviously it's a shame to lose Bruce Martin, who's left us after 12 or 13 seasons but that has opened up an opportunity for a spinner and it's good to see a young player rewarded for his success," he said.
Boult is well known to Northland cricket fans, he made his first-class debut at Cobham Oval against Auckland in March 2009 taking 4/78 in the second innings of the match. He is also a handy middle-order batsman and top-scored with 76 for ND in his second first-class match last season - also at Cobham Oval - helping them to a win in their match against Central Districts.
Boult and Anton Devcich are the newly contracted players, while Daniel Flynn was not offered a New Zealand contract and drops into the ND squad.
Devcich made his debut for ND in the 2004-05 season but missed out on a contract last year. He remained part of the wider squad, playing in several matches in both the one-day and four-day formats.
From the 2009 list of ND contracted players BJ Watling and Kane Williamson have picked up Black Cap contracts, while Martin has transferred to Auckland.
Martin played in 89 first-class matches for ND, taking 220 wickets with a best haul of 7-33. He also played in 73 50-over matches and 21 T20 games.
Fast bowler Te Ahu Davis was also left off the list of 11 contracted players but remains an option for coach Grant Bradburn, with one player still to be added to the list at the end of August.
ND CEO David Cooper has hinted that there may be as many as two overseas players contracted for the HRV Twenty20 competition.
"The regulations this year allow us to contract two overseas players for the competition and we've been talking to overseas players now that we know the schedule of the competition."
The association should be in a position to announce one or two players by the end of August.
Last year Tillakaratne Dilshan was the Knight's overseas player but that is unlikely this year because Sri Lanka's series against the West Indies will clash with the HRV Cup.
Northern Knights: Graeme Aldridge, Jono Boult, Trent Boult, Anton Devcich, Daniel Flynn, James Marshall, Peter McGlashan, Michael Parlane, Bradley Scott, Brad Wilson, Joseph Yovich.
ND players who were not considered because they have New Zealand contracts are: Brent Arnel, Tim Southee, Dan Vettori, BJ Watling and Kane Williamson.
