A half-time rev up by Takahiwai's coach kept his side on track after earlier drifting off task during their 44-20 win over the City Knights.
In what was rugby league's first full weekend of play, after last weekend's opening game was a rematch of last year's final, the Takahiwai Warriorsshook off the first game wobbles to stay on target for a comfortable win.
Takahiwai coach Shane Hool said he was happy with how his team went on Saturday despite going slightly "ad lib" after storming to an early 16-point lead.
"It's always the hardest game of the season, I think," Hool said. "There's always a bit of rustiness in the first game.
"We started off well, stuck to our game plan and got 16-nil up until the boys started to do a little ad lib playing. [And], City came back, to their credit."
"We probably should have won by more but went off the game plan and got a bit scrappy with ball skills."
Hool recognised player of the day Jessie Epiha's contribution to the game as he made his return after a season away from the game. Another strong contributor for Takahiwai was captain Ed Wilson, who took the ball forward all day to give his side strong front foot ball.
Hool credited the condition of Fishbone Park in Otangarei as being in good nick considering the lack of rain Northland has seen recently.
In other premier rugby league matches over the weekend, the Portland Panthers were victorious over the Hora Hora Broncos by 34-28; the Hikurangi Stags were too strong for the Northern Wairoa Bulls 50-12; Muriwhenua Falcons breezed past the Kerikeri Slayers 54-10; while the Moerewa Tigers beat the Hokianga Pioneers 36-22.
