Northland men's hockey coach Dave Adams hopes to turn the tables this year after a forgettable 2012.

The former Bream Bay club man has been confirmed as the coach for this year's National Hockey League season, his second in charge.

Although admitting last season was forgettable, Adams is boosted by a large number of returning players who hopefully have learned from last year.

"I sort of felt the need to do it for a couple years and get my head around it," said Adams, "and they always say the second year is always better. Hopefully that's the case."

Adams plans to bring a more structured game plan to the turf.

"From a personal point of view, I want to have a clear path of how I want the team to play so when they go out on the pitch they've got a game plan that everyone knows. So, therefore everyone knows we can play as a team.

"The intention [was always] to take as many local players and be a bit different to what has happened.

"A good number of the guys who were around last year are back again and part of the wider training squad."

Adams said from a team point of view he wanted to focus on their fitness as a unit so they do not get left behind in tough matches.

Hockey Northland coach-force coach Bevan Gibbs said it was good to have Adams back for a second year as it is an appointment they feel is important.

"It gives Dave a chance to learn from what he did in the 2012 season," said Gibbs.

"He's now been able to bring it into the 2013 season, which is good for us as an organisation.

"Last year was [his] first year out as a player and there's a big step between playing to coaching.

"It's a transition I believe he can make which is really positive for him."

Gibbs said he expected Adams would name a trial squad once the season gets underway.

Hockey Northland has also named its girls under-15 coach, and under-21 men's and women's coaches.

Carol Cottam will take care of the under-15 girls, while Richard Storey and Vicki Gribble will be head coaches of the women's and men's teams.

Gribble has been reappointed as head coach of the Northland under-21 men after coaching the team that competed in last year's tournament. Gribble is a legend of Northland Hockey with 220 caps to her name to go with an endless supply of head coaching positions over 20 years.
