One thing the Northland community does well is support our local talent. Today, the Whangarei Boys' High School Old Boys' Association is supporting their young golfers in a fundraising tournament for the school's golf team.
The Old Boys' Association usually holds the event as a fundraiser for themselves, but thisyear the funds are to be used to help send the school's golf team to Thailand next April for the Asia Pacific World School's Golf Challenge tournament - where they are the current champions after winning the team's best gross prize in April this year.
Boys' High School is fast becoming a nursery for golf talent in the north. This year has seen the school compete successfully on the world stage at the tournament in April and nationally where the top team won the New Zealand Secondary Schools title.
Coupled with the team's success, individual results have also shown promise, with players like Chase McKeown winning the Bream Bay Classic, and Luke Brown winning the James Busby Matchplay - Brown also achieved second place in the City of Auckland Classic, the best result ever achieved by a Northlander.
Brown and McKeown are not the only Boys' High golfers to have successful years with two other members, Sean Masters and Kadin Neho, recently being selected in the New Zealand team to contest the prestigious Australian Youth Olympic Festival in 2013 - a tournament for the best age group players from around the world.
The Old Boys' Association recognised the talent in the golfing arena a few years ago and began to develop a facility at the school which would allow students to practise more often and give them access to some of the best golfing technology available.
The facility is set to be completed in time for the start of the 2013 school year.
Today's ambrose tournament for teams of three is to be held at the Mt Denby Golf Course. Entry fees are $25 per person, or $75 per team. There is a shot-gun start at 11am and all are welcome to play.
