The bowlers found the going tough on Whangarei's dry wickets on Saturday as the batsmen found form in the Lion Red premier cricket competition.
Veteran Bert Horner continued his recent run of form that recently saw him recalled into the Northland side, with an unbeaten century at the Cobham Oval, as
City overhauled Kamo's total of 240 to win their match.
Horner's innings was almost chanceless with an attempted catch at full stretch by Rhys Farrand, as he approached his 90s, his only scary moment.
Earlier Farrand and Ian Page had both scored seventies to set City a good total to chase but City made short work of it, scoring 241 in just over 40 overs.
"It was a great batting wicket but they really shouldn't have reached the total that easily," Kamo captain Boris Jurlina said.
He said the bowlers, with a couple of exceptions, had not bowled in the right areas and they had paid the price.
``Perhaps we were a bit overconfident after reaching a good total but we just didn't bowl well enough to win,'' he said.
Maungakaramea, also batting first, carved out a competitive total of 235/8 in their match against Whangarei Boys' High School but doggedly defended it when it was their turn to bowl.
Steven Knox was the top scorer in the country club's total, scoring 90, before he was caught by Vishan Harypursat off the bowling of Aaron Wilson.
Wilson's second spell started off something of a fightback by High School and helped by three run outs they had put the brakes on Maungakaramea until the Jessup brothers cut loose in the final overs.
Glenn Jessup, with a number of big boundaries, was particularly brutal in destroying the bowlers' figures.
He was also instrumental in taking an excellent catch off the bowling of Mike Harris to capture the wicket of High School's player-coach and dangerman Jamie Lee.
High School proved to be a spent force after that and they were all out for 103.
Onerahi-Central won the third match of the Premier Grade competition despite the best efforts of English-based Pakistani professional Tauseef Satti.
Satti carried his bat for Kaipara in reply to Onerahi's handy total of 222 all out.
In spite of the regular fall of wickets at the other end, Satti managed to get through to 100 not out, as his side were bundled out for 151.
