Boxers take on Aussie's finest

Four Northland boxers will be making the trip to Queensland to face some of Australia's best.

Deanne Carpenter, 20, Olivia Siakisini, 25, Harrison Knew, 17, and Luke Fever, 19, will form a strong Northland contingent.

Carpenter has been incredibly successful in her boxing career.

Taking up boxing as a 13-year-old, she went on to compete at junior, youth, senior and elite levels in New Zealand.

Over her time she has become a seven-time national champion.

She recently became the national elite champion for the 75kg division.

She also had a tough loss in the second round of the women's world championships in Kazakhstan.

Carpenter received a bye to advance through the first round of the women's 75kg middleweight class before losing by a 2-1 majority to Argentina's Lucia Perez.

The judge awarded the fight to Carpenter and another to Perez, leaving the third - Egyptian Nagy Osman - to make a ruling after he scored the fight 38-38, awarding victory to the South American.

Knew will be going into the boxing tournament off the back of a national title.

He started boxing when he was 14, in the junior 52kg division.

In his first year he fell at the final hurdle but eventually took the final step to become New Zealand champion.
