The Centre Awards night and presentation of prizes for the 2012-13 season were held last Saturday before a crowd of more than 150 bowlers at the Kamo club.

Guests were welcomed by centre president Gwen and congratulations extended to all prize-winners on the night.

The centre prize-giving culminated in the presentation of gold star badges (five centre titles) to Trevor Reader of Whangarei club and Bruce Horscroft of the Onerahi club.

New Zealand certificates were also presented to the Northland Women's Open Representative team who finished third in the New Zealand Inter Centre Tournament; Northland Open Men's Representative team, who reached the quarter-finals of the same event, and to Savanna Lauder of Hikurangi who placed second in the NZ National Secondary Schools singles championship.

The Curry Trophy was presented to the Northland Women's Reserve Representative team who won the Northern Region Reserve Grade Championship for 2012-13.

The Bowls Northland Awards for 2012-13, sponsored by Yovich & Co and Kaipara Agri Centre, were then presented to recipients by Wally Yovich representing the sponsors. These awards were presented to:

Young player of the Year: Savanna Lauder, Hikurangi.

Side of the Year: Northland Women's Open Representative team: Sue Wightman, Marny Jones, Manu Timoti, Diane Lawrence, Ann Halls, Anne Bateman, Linda Pedro and Lauren Mills.

Player of the Year: Trevor Johnston, Maungatapere.

Coach of the Year: Gwen Lawson.

Greenkeeper of the Year: Kelvin Bint, Hikurangi.

Administrator of the Year: Jim Urlich, Waipu.

Service to Bowls Award: Len Lawrence, Mangawhai.

Club of the Year: Ngunguru.

Congratulations to all these recipients who over the year have served bowls well.

Winter bowls now gets under way throughout the centre and, with artificial greens at Hikurangi, Kamo, Ngunguru, Onerahi, Dargaville and Maungaturoto, there is plenty of competition available for everyone.

Rules changes

Clubs are in the process of having their annual meetings and the centre match committee wants to remind you that any changes you want to make to next season's playing programme need to be into it for approval by May 31. Club pages including officials for the centre hand-book should be into the match committee by the centre AGM, which is to be held on June 23, 10.30am, at Bowls Whangarei.
