Northern Mystics netballer Jess Moulds is hoping luck is on her side tomorrow when her side go up against Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in the ANZ Netball Championships.
The young Goal Keep from Ararua in Northland made her debut for the Mystics during last week's 56-54 win over the Melbourne
Vixens in round four.
"It was great to get on court finally but I was quite nervous ... I was on for half a game but I twisted my ankle in the second quarter and then I came off," the 21-year-old said.
Moulds now has to wait to see if she will be fit to play in Hamilton against the Magic.
"I'm seeing the physio who will decide whether I can play or not - but then we don't find out who is starting until the night before the game or the day of the game sometimes."
Mystics coach Debbie Fuller has the tough task of deciding who will start each week, Moulds said.
"We have a lot of depth - it is amazing. We have had a few injuries already this season and the girls coming off the bench have been really strong. Having a strong bench will definitely help us later in the season."
As one of the newbies in the squad, Moulds said she was learning plenty from the senior players, including fellow circle defender and Silver Fern Anna Scarlett.
"Anna's great to play with and I already learned a lot from her," she said.
The Mystics have started this season positively - winning three from four - after three seasons where the team have failed to fire.
"The team this year really gels - both on and off the court which is great. We are feeling really positive after our start to the season and we intend to push hard for the rest of the season to make the top four and try and win this competition," Moulds said.
Although the NZ accelerant squad member had been thrown into the deep end, Mould said she was enjoying every minute of her first ANZ Championship campaign.
"It's pretty full-on as I am studying 8am-5pm five days a week. I'm doing my post-graduate diploma in dietetics at the Otago University campus in Queen St in Auckland. I train in the morning and then with the team in the afternoon. It's pretty hard to concentrate on our afternoon training but the more I do it, the more I'm getting used to it," she said.
Northern Mystics play Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic at Mystery Creek Events Centre tomorrow in Hamilton at 6.20pm.
