Mattresses, beds and blankets were some of the winter items packed and delivered to Northland families in need this weekend.

The items were donated, sorted and delivered to Whangarei families through the New Zealand Network Charity's Winter Needs programme.

Chief executive Angela Sothern said the programme, which delivers the items for free, focused on families who would be struggling through the colder months.

"We're receiving for the most vulnerable and needy. We put our slippers and heaters on this morning but some families are truly waking up to nothing," she said.

On Saturday the group sorted through bedding, duvet covers, blankets, beds and other winter items to prepare them for delivery.

Ms Sothern said the charity worked with Manaia PHO and other organisations to identify families in need. She said families were appreciative of the deliveries.

"They are very humble and very grateful. Some are shy so they're pleased items are delivered to their front door," she said.

Ms Sothern said the charity differed from resale stores as the items were delivered for free.
