A recent publication by a group of Whangarei writers is continuing the literary tradition of combining broadsheets and poetry.
A twice-yearly national booklet, broadsheet: new new zealand poetry, features the work of mainly New Zealand poets.
The Whangarei writers collective's more modest "broadsheet", under the name Take Flight, has been distributed aroundlocal cafes, libraries, waiting rooms and galleries.
The first issue features poems by Aaron Robertson, Arthur Fairley, Bernard Heise, Martin Porter, Michelle Elvy, Peter Larsen, Piet Nieuwland, and Vaughan Gunson.
Mr Gunson said the free flyer offers an informal and accessible medium in which the collective members' poetry speaks for itself and reaches an audience.
Reception to Take Flight had been positive, he said.
The broadsheet idea evolved from monthly get-togethers of the writers' collective and poets also have work on the Take Flight website (http://takeflightnz.wordpress.com).
