Police are continuing their investigation into a serious assault on a woman inside her Whangārei home.

Police were called to Murdoch Cres in Raumanga about midnight on Tuesday after a report a woman had been hurt in an assault overnight.

The woman was taken to hospital in a moderate condition.

Whangārei Detective Senior Sergeant Shane Pilmer yesterday said police were focused on identifying the person responsible and understanding what took place.

In an update today, police said their investigation was continuing. They were yet to comment on whether the attack was random or targeted.

“Police will continue to provide updates as the investigation allows.”

Murdoch Cres was blocked off on Tuesday while police investigated, with one resident telling the Northern Advocate the property had been taped off.

Police were going door-to-door in the neighbourhood, telling residents a serious incident had taken place.

The resident that afternoon could see forensic staff working in the area.

Police wanted to hear from people who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, including vehicles, in the area between 4pm and midnight on Monday.

“We would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen any vehicle leaving the area at speed between 11.30pm and 12am last night.”

Information can be provided to police via 105, quoting file number 251125/6316, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
