Heavy rain and gales heralded the onslaught of autumn weather tantrums over the weekend and, although it has eased a little, the temperamental weather will stick around for a day or two.

Farmers and gardeners will welcome the rain arriving before the ground and growing conditions gets too cool.

A couple visiting Whangarei to celebrate their first wedding anniversary managed to smile despite the drenching rain at the Town Basin yesterday.

Ik Yang and Jiwon Ryu said they had come prepared for cold and wet weather.

The strong, moist, northerly flow that brought heavy rain and gales to Northland yesterday is expected to freshen as it swings to the northwest and west today, and into tomorrow.
