Hoons on Northland's beaches will be under the spotlight at public meetings arranged by the Department of Conservation next month. Bad behaviour by motorists on Northland's beaches had sparked "many calls of complaint" over the summer, said DOC community relations spokesman Reuben Williams. "There are problems." The Far North had big problems withhoons, particularly at Ahipara and Ninety Mile Beach. Three people have died in vehicle accidents on Far North beaches in the past two years. Bream Bay, from Marsden Pt to Waipu Cove, were areas of concern in the Whangarei district, he said. Driver behaviour is also a concern on Pouto Peninsula and Ripiro Beach. DOC will hold a meetings in February with Waipu police and community members to discuss ways of dealing with the problems. "Last year we had information days and we are likely to do that again," Mr Williams said. Though some locals were guilty of bad behaviour on beaches, many of the problems were caused by outsiders to the region. They needed to be made aware of the rules and regulations on Northland's beaches, Mr Williams said. No date had yet been set for the meetings.
