The Whangarei branch of the National Council of Women is holding an open meeting about discrimination and violence against women next week.

The group, which has no affiliation to any political party, was founded by Kate Sheppard.

Its role is to improve opportunities and work for the welfare of women and families through research, information, representation and action.

"We collect the views of Whangarei women - in relation to changing legislation and government consultation documents," said Whangarei branch president Pip Judge.

"Our views have impact at political level."

Discrimination and violence is the subject of facilitated group discussions being held at the May Bain Room at the Whangarei Public Library next Thursday between noon and 2pm.

This National Council of Women open meeting is an opportunity for people, community groups, men and women to talk, listen, connect and share views on these major issues of concern.

Mrs Judge urged people to bring lunch, yourself and friends to the meeting. Tea and coffee is available.

"Our views from the Whangarei branch make a difference and our members know they are contributing at a political level, having a say and making a difference," Mrs Judge said.

"Our members' voices represent a range of different views and all views are included."
