Rain put a dampener on crowd numbers at the 135th Whangarei A&P; Summer Show on Saturday but better weather yesterday saw an "incredible" crowd turn up to
the annual country show.
Whangarei A&P; Society executive director Malcolm McKerrow was pleased with total crowd numbers, although down from last year's 17,000-plus numbers, as families converged on the Barge Park Showgrounds at Maunu to enjoy sideshows, animal shows and trade shows.
This year was the first time the show opened to the public for only two days - it used to be three days - as trade exhibitors felt three days was too expensive for them to cover, Mr McKerrow said.
Instead, the equestrian events were held on Friday without the public.
Mr McKerrow described the crowd at the weekend-long show as "just incredible".
He said the crowd's favourite spectacle was the Kiwi entertainment duo, the Topp Twins.
"I had that many people come into my office asking for me to bring the Topp Twins back.
"The twins said this is one of the events they really enjoy doing so we're very lucky they're pleased to keep coming back," said Mr McKerrow, who believed the twins would return for a third time next year.
A dancing kunikuni pig from Waikato also proved a popular favourite with the crowd.
