Part of a one-lane bridge gave way as a truck carrying a trailer tried to cross it in Whangarei.

The Brownlee General Carriers and Contractor truck was carrying a large digger when it tried to cross the one-lane bridge on Mulberry Lane, Otaika, about 10am yesterday.

However, part of the bridge gave way, leaving the left-hand side of the truck stuck in the collapsed wooden structure and the digger hanging precariously on the back.

Brownlee owner Maurice Brownlee was late yesterday still trying to get the truck and digger removed and was unavailable for comment.

Police were not called and no one was injured.

A sign on the approach to the bridge lists the heavy vehicle axle weight limit as a total of 20,500kg.

Mulberry Lane is a short road off Otaika Valley Rd, south of Whangarei city.
