It won't be hard to pick Cameron Leslie's support crew out of the crowd at London's Paralympics.

They will all proudly be wearing black T-shirts emblazoned with "Team Cameron" as they yell and cheer the Whangarei swimmer down the pool.

Leslie smashed the world record in the men's 150 metre individual swim medley at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and collected gold.

Leslie, who has been swimming for about 12 years, was born with a quadruple limb deficiency; his legs stop above his knees, while one arm has one finger and the other stops just below the elbow.

It's a congenital disorder that doctors have struggled to explain; his siblings have not been affected, nor will his children.

Northland supporters have the chance to get behind the defending Paralympic swimming champion by donning a team T-shirt.

Leslie and a mate got together and came up with a design. They approached the business Mr Vintage T-shirts to produce the limited edition shirt and convinced them to donate $5 from each shirt sold to Leslie for his Paralympic campaign.

"We had an idea of what we wanted but Robert Ewan came up with something much better," Leslie said.

"Supporters tees are now available for those who are keen to be part of my journey to gold at London."

The black T-shirts have a crest featuring a swimmer, a medal, a kiwi and wheelchair rugby - Leslie's other passion out of the pool.

In the middle there are the words: "Ina te Mahi he Rangatira." Leslie explains the concept: "The work you put in is the results you get out."

It's a saying he has applied to achieving Paralympic swimming success. And he appreciates all the support he gets from the public.

"Just knowing you have the support it gives you a confidence boost," Leslie said.

He said as he took his place on the start blocks in Beijing he thought of all the people who had helped him with his journey.

"Yeap, it spurs me on."

With less than two weeks until the Games, Leslie will head to Wales to polish his performance before heading to the village and taking part in the opening ceremony.

The defending champion is fitter, faster and stronger than ever, turning in a world record performance a month out from his target race at London.

"If I stay healthy and look after my body then every thing should go well," he said.

Training has been gruelling with Leslie swimming 50km a week but he knows the training, combined with keeping his emotions in check on the day, will pay off.

Poolside will be his mum and dad, Theresa and Ross, plus bother David and sister Rebecca. His other brother Brent will have to watch the performances on television.

Leslie's partner Emma Gosling will also be cheering him on. Watch out for Leslie in action September 1, 200m freestyle; September 2, 150m medley; September 6, 50m backstroke.
