Stranded kayakers rescued in big blow

Police and coastguard are warning people to check the weather before getting on the water after two kayakers were stranded for "hours".

A male and female kayaker had headed out from Pyle Rd, One Tree Point, at midday yesterday but became stranded on Snake Bank, between One Tree Point and Reotahi, after the wind picked up.

Senior Sergeant Cliff Metcalfe said the alarm was raised after a catamaran passing by, L-Avenir, spotted the kayakers.

"[The kayakers] had gone out and at the time it was windy but not enough to worry them. The winds picked up and the male was concerned they'd get thrown out of the kayak so they went to Snake Bank which was the closest place they could find."

The MetService weather forecast said at the time there was a westerly with an average wind speed of 26km/h. Mr Metcalfe said the strong winds meant they could not get off the bank.

"The kayakers managed to paddle to deeper water where they were picked up and towed by the [L-Avenir] close to the Marsden Cove Marina."

Mr Metcalfe said the catamaran met up with a Coastguard boat which transported the kayakers to the marina.

Mr Metcalfe said both kayakers were wearing life jackets and shorts and a t-shirt. He said the incident was a reminder for people to check the weather before heading out on the water.

"People need to be aware of their skill level. They could have quite easily been tipped and swept out along the tide."

Coastguard spokeswoman Georgie Smith said people should always check the marine weather and carry "at least two forms of waterproof communication".

"We're grateful and it's fantastic that a boatie was able to raise the alarm."
