Motorists are urged to take care in the wet weather after a slip south of the Brynderwyns, as State Highway One has now been closed in both directions.

Diversions have been put in place due to the hazardous conditions, police confirmed.

Vehicles travelling south are being diverted at the intersection of State Highway 1 and the Braigh and northbound traffic is being diverted at the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai turn-off.

Northbound traffic was initially diverted onto State Highway 12, but this has now been closed due to flooding.

“This diversion route is not suitable for heavy motor vehicles, who are advised to expect lengthy delays,” a police spokesperson said.

Police earlier warned that the diversions might change.

“Police ask all motorists to take extra care on the roads and avoid travel where possible as heavy rain and strong winds continue to batter the region,” the spokesperson said.

“Keep level-headed, allow for extra time, and most of all, please stay safe.”

Waka Kotahi earlier posted on social media about lanes being blocked at the SH1/SH12 intersection.

“Take extra care through the area and expect delays,” the agency warned.

Another issue has been reported on SH1 between Mata and Ruakaka, with loose gravel on the road.

“Police are aware of loose gravel in the area due to road works, and have notified the appropriate agencies,” a police spokesperson said, following a crash in the area around 10am today.

One person sustained moderate injuries in the two-vehicle collision and was taken to hospital.

Another two-vehicle crash on Te Mai Rd, Woodhill shortly after 3.30pm resulted in serious injuries to one person, who was transported to Northland Base Hospital.
