A woman aged in her 40s has been injured in a skydiving accident at Bay of Islands Airport near Kerikeri.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon with the woman suffering a badly broken femur in a heavy landing, a St John spokesman said.
The Northland Rescue Helicopter was dispatched tothe airport but diverted to State Highway 10 after a serious crash north of Waipapa a short time later. She was taken to Whangarei Hospital by ambulance instead.
Skydive Bay of Islands owner Hamish Funnell confirmed a female skydiver suffered a leg injury in a heavy landing.
Her equipment functioned correctly and she had an experienced instructor. She was due to undergo surgery today.
"We are keeping in touch with her and wish her a speedy recovery. This was an unfortunate accident that we will investigate to see if anything further could have been done to prevent it," he said.
