It took six teachers to break up a melee at Kamo High School after a youth wielding an empty glass bottle walked on to school grounds and allegedly threatened a student over his school cap.
A Kamo High School student was attacked after the youth, who did not attend the school,
entered the school grounds off Wilkinson Ave about 9.10am yesterday.
The attack on one of the shcool's top students has disgusted principal Bernie Taffs, who said the school's security would be reviewed immediately.
Kamo High already has security guards patrolling its gates at lunchtime and during breaks, but not before school.
"It's a very serious incident and we have to make sure our students are safe and feel safe at school," Mr Taffs said.
"This is a violation of our community and the children we really care about."
It was the last day of school and only about 300 students were expected.
Mr Taffs said the drama began as a Kamo High School Year 9 student walked to school.
A white Subaru station wagon carrying four people had pulled over and a youth in the car had asked him for his $20, black, regulation school cap, but the student had refused and kept walking.
He said when the student had reached school a youth from the station wagon had approached him carrying a glass bottle and allegedly started a fight. A second youth from the car had joined in the fight. Other pupils and the teachers had then tried to break up the attack.
Mr Taffs said he had seen a cellphone video of the fight. Neither he nor any of his staff recognise the two attacker, who had taken the empty alcohol bottle and got in the station wagon, which had been parked near the old gym entrance, after the brawl. A teacher had tried to take a photo of the car number plate as it left the grounds and was nearly run over, Mr Taffs said.
Some students were left crying and in shock after the unprovoked violence flared.
Mr Taffs said his staff had told him there was a strong smell of alcohol on the youths from the car. The student who was threatened over his cap had sustained a cut to his leg but had returned for prizegiving in the afternoon and collected an award.
"He is one of our top students and for this to happen to him is horrific," Mr Taffs said.
While there were security guards patrolling at the school during interval and lunchtimes, they may be used in the mornings, Mr Taffs said. He would also consider restricting the number of gates students could use.
Kamo police later confirmed they had four young people - two females and two males - they were speaking to in relation to the incident. They were aged between 15 and 18.
Charges would be laid and would relate to the alleged unlawful taking of a vehicle and assault.
