A Northland school staff member is being investigated by police and Child, Youth and Family.
The school's principal yesterday confirmed the investigation was under way but would make no further comment.
"We will let the police go through their investigation and that will take however long it takes. We willtake it from there and if there needs to be comment, that will come from the chair of the board," the principal said.
The Northern Advocate understands the subject of the investigation is a male member of staff.
Police would not be making any comment on the investigation at this stage, a spokeswoman said.
In an email sent this week to parents and caregivers of students at the school, the principal said police and CYF services were conducting a joint investigation into the behaviour of a school employee.
"The investigation is currently in its early stages and no criminal charges have been laid," the principal said. "The staff member involved is on leave of absence and has been advised not to have contact with students for the duration of the investigation."
The principal said police had said that at the conclusion of the investigation a decision would be made as to whether charges would be laid.
"For this reason and to assist in maintaining the safety and well-being of the school's students and staff, it is important that parents refrain from listening to or generating gossip and speculation," the email said.
The principal also advised parents if they were approached by the media not to discuss the matter and assured parents the situation was being managed safely and the students' education was a priority.
The principal ended by saying: "I will endeavour to keep you informed of this situation as further information comes to hand."
