A pedestrian has died after being hit by a truck in Whangārei this morning.

Emergency services were called to Kamo Rd in Kensington about 9.35am.

Police said the person died at the scene.

Kamo Rd is closed between Mains Ave and Simons St while police clear the scene.

Northbound traffic is being diverted down Mains Ave.

Cafe Narnia owner Ivy Luo said she and a worker were in the kitchen when they heard a loud noise outside.

She went to look by which time emergency services had already been phoned.

Luo saw them arrive at the crash, which occurred next door to the cafe.

Police said inquiries were ongoing.
