Northland's Maori tertiary students with a passion for their language and culture can now apply for a Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship.
The scholarship, funded by the Maori Soldiers Trust, distributes between $500 and $3000 per recipient to support students on their academic journey.
Established by the Maori Soldiers TrustAct 1957, the scholarship was set up to promote and support higher education amongst Maori.
Five Northlanders have been awarded the scholarship in previous years with one Whangarei woman receiving $2000.
The scholarship is administered by Te Tumu Paeroa, the New Maori Trustee, and is open to all Maori students however, where practical, preference will be given to descendants of World War I veterans.
The head of Te Tumu Paeroa Jamie Tuuta said the scholarship is extremely significant.
"It is important for us to remember the sacrifices made by those brave young men and women and the Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship honours that sacrifice by supporting their Maori sons and daughters to excel in their educational aspirations."
