Northland will avoid the wet and wild weather set to hit the lower end of the country.

Northland will be spared frosty nights and wet and windy weather currently in other parts of the country.

The cold southwesterly winds will be replaced by blustery north westerlies towards the weekend which should bring isolated showers. MetService weather forecaster Rebekah LaBar said showers in the far south were likely to have a wintry feel.

The second half of the week will see wet and windy weather returning to the country .

Ms LaBar said daytime temperatures in Whangarei today and tomorrow would hover in the teens, with overnight lows of 7deg C. She said temperatures in Northland would increase later this week.

MetService said clearing skies and lighter winds coupled with the cold air were likely to ring alarm bells for gardeners and farmers, with frosty conditions set to return.
