Police want Bream Bay residents to report sightings of two cars suspected to be linked to burglaries in the area.
The cars are a silver/grey Mercedes and red/maroon Mitsubishi station wagon.
Whangarei police community safety officer Sergeant James McCullough said anyone spotting the cars - or any other vehicle and its occupants behaving in a suspicious manner - should contact police by immediately dialling 111.
"Give us as much detail as you can, including the location of the vehicles, description of the occupants, what they're up to and which direction they may have headed," he said.
Jewellery is a favourite target for thieves and Mr McCullough advised owners to photograph jewellery, have it appraised and hide it away securely. He also urged precautions to protect property from thieves who have also siphoned fuel from vehicles and taken tools from garden sheds.
"Lock garden sheds and, if possible, park vehicles in a secure garage or at least as close to your house as possible overnight with a sensor light covering the area," he said.
Motorists should also consider installing an anti-siphon device in the fuel tank inlet.
