Whangarei's two-wheeled commuters can cycle on down and nab free cycle travel plans with the first On Ya Bike event, also offering cycling lessons for those who dread biking.
The Northland social enterprise RideCycle is setting up at the CBEC Eco Solutions site on Bank St, offering cycling skills training, bike repair and travel planning help as part of its bid to encourage a cycling-friendly city and keep unused bikes off the scrap heap, today and tomorrow.
Co-founder Terry Jones has been working with cycling advocates in the district, such as Whare Bike and Bike Northland, and hopes Whangarei will lead the way with bike friendliness.
"We will be doing minor repairs - oiling chains, pumping tyres or adjusting gears - and teaching people the basic safety skills for riding a bike."
He said the group also wanted to help cyclists devise their own travel plan through the city. "We will help you track the most efficient and safest way to get you work on your bike - your own travel plan."
The On Ya Bike event runs at the venue on 3 Bank St this afternoon from 4 to 7.30pm, and tomorrow from 10am to 2pm.
