Low clouds and moist air will leave Northland muggy this Labour Weekend, MetService says, with overnight lows 4C higher than normal.

Low clouds and moist air will leave Northland muggy this Labour Weekend, MetService says, with overnight lows 4C higher than normal.

Labour Weekend is the unofficial start of summer and while the temperatures will be warm across Northland this holiday weekend, its also going to be wet and very muggy.

MetService meteorologist April Clark said a moist northerly front would hit Northland today, bringing clouds and rain spreading across the region.

Clark said tonight and into Friday there will be localised heavy downpours, particularly in the north and east of the region. Saturday would have more rain and clouds, but some sunny periods too.

Sunday was likely to be the best day to go to the beach with more clouds and some sun.

She said people making plans for the long weekend should keep an eye on weather forecasts as the situation could change.

"Don't make any big plans without looking at what the weather is doing as things could change between (this forecast) and Monday.''

But the big issue this weekend would be the mugginess, caused by the moisture in the air and higher than normal overnight temperatures.

Clark said temperatures during the day would reach a summery 20-22C across Northland over the next four days.

However, overnight lows would be 14C to 16C - four degrees above normal for the time of year - and that would leave things very muggy, particularly at night.

''It's going to be sticky. It could be a problem for some and it's because of the moisture in the air that will make it very muggy.''
