Charges laid
after fire
A Northland man has been charged with arson after a fire, which devastated a music and stage production business in Kerikeri. The man, who was granted interim name suppression when he appeared before a registrar in the Kaikohe District Court yesterday, entered a not guilty plea and elected trial by jury. He was granted bail until February 7 when he is due back in court for a case review hearing. The blaze, on October 24, gutted a large shed on Waipapa Rd full of sound and lighting equipment used by the Music Workshop, a business which stages concerts and public events all over Northland.
SH1 surface under repair
One lane of State Highway 1 through Whangarei will be closed until Friday.
Contractors have started work to repair the road surface on Western Hills Drive, just south of Manse St. The left hand south-bound lane will be closed from 9am to 4pm every day until Friday 15 December. One south-bound lane will remain open.
The second stage of work – when the new surface will be laid – will be completed in January. NZ Transport Agency asks motorists to be patient and keep to the posted speed limits while travelling through the area, to ensure the safety of the workers and all road users.
