Maori voter info
If you're a Maori voter and want to change what electoral roll you are on, keep an eye on the mailbox. Information packs will be sent to 477,000 Maori voters this week as the 2018 Maori Electoral Option gets underway. The option, which runs until August 2, allows Maori voters to choose whether they want to be on the Maori roll or the general roll for the next two general elections. For voters in the Northland region, that means if you're currently able to vote for candidates in the Northland or Whangarei electorate, you can choose to swap rolls and vote for Te Tai Tokerau candidates - or vice-versa. It will not affect which party you vote for. The Maori Electoral Option pack will tell you which roll you're on and give you the option of changing roll types. If you're happy with the roll you're on, you don't need to do anything. If you do want to change rolls, then sign the letter and return it by post or uploaded to www.maorioption.org.nz.
An electric vehicle fast-charger was officially opened in Kaitaia yesterday. One of several charging stations being installed in the Far North as part of the Crimson Coast EV Highway, it was opened by representatives of the Te Ahu Trust and ChargeNet. It is in the carpark behind Te Ahu. A convoy of electric vehicles (EVs) called in on their way to Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) on this year's Leading the Charge Road Trip from Bluff. ChargeNet chief executive Steve West said he was excited by the region's growing EV infrastructure.
