Northland walk features in Lonely Planet
One of Northland's scenic 'epic' walks, the 32km Cape Brett Track is one of only three New Zealand walks featuring in Lonely Planet's latest book, Epic Hikes of the World. A follow-up to Lonely Planet's Epic Bike Rides of the World (2016) andEpic Drives of the World (2017), the book showcases narratives about 50 of the world's most spectacular hikes. The other NZ walks are the Routeburn Track (32km) and Abel Tasman Coast Track (60km). Other classic walks included are the USA Pacific Crest Trail, the 'W' Trek in Patagonia, a family hike in the French Pyrenees, empty stretches of the Great Wall of China and wildlife encounters on a Zambian walking safari.
Police busy with fights
Kaitaia police were kept busy with outbreaks of violence on Saturday night, including a brawl after the Kaitaia-Eastern rugby match at Arnold Rae Park. Patrols were dispatched three times to reports of around 10 people fighting in Okahu Rd.
A man who allegedly drove over road signs, smashed through the gate at Kaitaia Intermediate School and churned up the playing field on Saturday night was charged with driving with excess alcohol and wilful damage. He reportedly recorded 564 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, more than twice the legal limit.
Alcohol bylaw review
Whangārei District Council's bylaw that controls alcohol in public places is up for review. The bylaw controls things like the opening hours or licensed premises or where alcohol can be sold. WDC, Far North District Council and Kaipara District Council are working on the review together to get alignment across the region where appropriate and possible. The review must be completed by December. The council will formally consult on the bylaw in September and more information, about the consultation and the feedback the council is seeking will be released in the coming weeks.
