Two of the video's big stars - Joe Naufahu (Game of Thrones) and Jayden Daniels (Shortland Street) - about to jump from Omapere wharf in Air New Zealand's new Northland-filmed safety video.

An Air New Zealand safety video showcasing the people and sights of Northland has been watched 2.2 million times in its first 24 hours online.

The video, called Summer of Safety, was filmed in the Bay of Islands and Hokianga. It features dozens of local extras alongside stars such as Rachel Hunter, Ladyhawke, Joe Naufahu of Game of Thrones and Jayden Daniels of Shortland Street.

The Bay of Islands Marketing Group, a coalition of local tourism businesses, helped pay for the video. The Far North District Council contributed $50,000.

Group chairman Charles Parker said it was their biggest and most exciting investment to date.

"I'm incredibly happy. It's a stunning result for the first 24 hours. We're looking forward to a busy summer."

Mr Parker said the video would be shown on Air New Zealand planes for four-and-a-half months, but would live on via the internet long after that.

Yesterday morning, after 24 hours online, the clip had been viewed 1.8 million times on Facebook alone. YouTube views totalled more than 261,000 and Twitter more than 185,000.

The video premiered in Kerikeri on Tuesday night before its official launch online and on board the airline's fleet on Wednesday morning.
