A boy has died following a quad bike accident on a farm near Kaikohe.
The 14-year-old went out to fetch the cows for milking about 5.30am this morning when the bike he was riding rolled into a ditch, trapping him underneath.
It is believed he was found by his father,who went out looking when he failed to return, then rushed him to Broadway Health, a medical centre in Kaikohe.
The centre was closed but St John Ambulance staff arrived and carried out CPR for some time before he was pronounced dead. Volunteers of the Kaikohe Fire Brigade were also called out to help.
Police have named the boy as Robert (also known as Robbie) McKenzie.
