A Northland man has died in a motorcycle crash in northern Queensland.

Robert Baillie, known as Robbie, was killed in Mackay, about 1000km north of Brisbane on Sunday. He was 25.

The former resident of Mangakaramea in Northland was remembered by friends as a "champion" with a "heart of gold", the Mackay Daily Mercury reported.

The paper said Mr Baillie was at Mackay Harbour Beach Races with friends on Sunday, just hours before he died in the crash.

Mr Baillie's housemate Christianne Iwaniuk said he was a great friend who would forever be remembered.

"He was a young man with a heart of gold who would do anything for anyone," she said.

District Inspector Andy Graham said police were still investigating the crash, which occurred about 8.15pm, but believed speed was a "major contributing factor".

Queensland Ambulance Service pronounced Mr Baillie dead at the scene.

The Mercury said it was the second fatal crash in the suburbs in less than a month.

A death notice for Mr Baillie published in yesterday's New Zealand Herald said he was the much loved son of Jane and Rob Baillie and had two brothers and a sister.

"Too fast boy, too fast," it said.
