It was a "miracle" a Kawakawa woman escaped with only a broken arm after a crash wrote off the car she was driving.

Kawakawa Constable Meagan Lyle said police were called to the accident on State Highway 1, between Whangae Rd and Taumatamakuku Settlement Rd, about 8.15am yesterday.

The 29-year-old woman had been driving from Kawakawa towards Moerewa, when the car left the road and finished up about 70 metres away on farmland.

"It appears that the vehicle has drifted left and crashed through the fence and hit a small embankment, and caused it to roll several times," Ms Lyle said.

The woman was taken to Bay of Islands Hospital with a broken arm and cuts and bruises.

However, she was lucky to not have sustained more serious injuries considering the extent of the crash.

"It is nothing short of a miracle that she survived - but I put it down to the fact that she was wearing her seatbelt," Ms Lyle said.

After a scene examination, it was likely alcohol was a factor in the crash, she said.

"It is a possibility that she has fallen asleep at the wheel as well," Ms Lyle said.
