An 18-year-old Raumanga man has appeared in court after six people were shot with a painball gun and a young woman suffered a serious eye injury.

Shane Paraha appeared in Whangarei District Court today on five charges of assault with a weapon relating to two females and four males.

Paraha faces a further charge of causing grievous bodily harm to an 18-year-old female.

He was remanded without plea until January 18 to apply for legal aid. He was expected to enter a plea at his next appearance.

Police were called about 3.30am on Sunday when a passenger in a car fired a paintball gun at a group waiting for a taxi on the corner of Bank and Water streets.

Police said the 18-year-old female was struck in the eye and, after a specialist appointment on Tuesday, the long-term prognosis was still to be determined.
