Police are investigating a fatal crash near Kaeo.

Police are investigating a fatal crash near Kaeo.

A man has died at the scene after losing control of the car he was driving and crashing it on a bank.

The accident happened at 11.30pm on Saturday on State Highway 10 near Kaeo.

"The driver lost control on a sharp corner prior to a one-lane bridge, travelled up a bank and rolled his vehicle," police said in a statement.

The man was travelling in the southbound lane before crashing. He was the vehicle's sole occupant and died at the scene.

The police serious crash unit was at the scene shortly after the crash.

Fire appliances from Kaeo and Mangonui were called but the latter was stood down as soon as it arrived. Police took charge of the scene and Mangonui firefighters were busied with traffic control.

Most parts of Northland experienced heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong northwesterlies between Saturday evening and Sunday morning while a front crossed the North Island. However, it was unclear whether rain contributed to the crash.

Police were expected to name the deceased once his next-of-kin had been notified.
