One of the biggest festivals in the Hindu calendar will be celebrated in Whangarei tomorrow with Indian dances and a buffet dinner.

The celebration will be hosted by the Shiraz Indian Restaurant on Walton St and includes bhangra, a type of popular music combining Punjabi folk traditions with Western pop music, and a quiz on Diwali - the Festival of Lights.

Restaurant owner Jas Singh is calling on people from all walks of life to participate in the cultural spectacle.

"Come along and enjoy an Indian experience, not only food but cultural interaction as well.

"We organised a similar celebration in 2011 and it was a success and this should also be a good experience for everyone."

Mr Singh is expecting between 110 and 120 people and more than half the tickets have already been sold.

Since space is limited, he urged those wishing to attend to purchase their tickets early.

The event will start at 6pm with an entree followed by dance items before a three-course meal and dessert are served.

Vegetarian and meat meals will be available.

Tickets are available at any Shiraz restaurant at $35 adults, $20 for children aged 3 to 10 while under-3s are free.

Diwali is perhaps the most important and ancient of the Indian festivals.

It is celebrated throughout India as well as in Indian communities around the world.
